This Week's Devotion - Create an Eternity John 3:16 (HCSB) 16 “For God loved the world in this way:[ He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. A few days ago I was privileged to hear the testimony of a gentleman whose house had burned down two weeks prior and he and his family had lost a life-time of their possessions. He said his first reaction arriving on the scene was a great thanksgiving that his family was safe, then sadness that so many mementos were gone. Then the shock was gone and they had to start rebuilding and dealing with all that entails and that's when the BIG question hit - WHY ME GOD? Apparently the guy had lived a good life, tried to be a good Christ follower and now this. His children asked him, "why us". His perspective - awe inspiring. Shortly after the fire he stopped at a convenience store to pick up a couple of things and a young man stopped him asking for money for food. Our gentlemen admitted that prior to the fire he would have brushed the guy off and gone on. But this time, because of all the generosity this man and his family had received, he invited the stranger to come into the store with him and pick out what he needed. As they were leaving the young man admitted he was so desperate that he was trying to build up the courage to go in and rob the store. Our gentleman friend shared his own story of loss and love shown by fellow believers - then shared the Greatest Love Story there is. Did the young man come to Jesus? We don't know. What we DO know is that because of a great loss a great love was shared and the chance for an eternity was created. Pass it on.

As result of their expansion, they have several pieces of almost new playground equipment that they are offering to Calvary Baptist Church free for the fetching. So, we need fetchers to disassemble, excavate poles, chip concrete from poles, load onto pickup trucks, unload from trucks, and stack onto wood sleepers at our playground. Reassembly will happen later this summer. This will happen on Saturday, June 1st, at 9:00 A.M. Since many hands make for easy work, we would like about 20 volunteers to help with this project. Mrs. Alice Burns passed away Monday, May 27. Visitation will be Thursday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel from 4:00-7:00pm with the funeral service at Calvary on Friday at 11:00am. Further details can be found on the Woodfin website or in the DNJ. Please join us in prayer.

This Week's Devotion - Victory Genesis 45: 4-8 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please, come near me,” and they came near. “I am Joseph, your brother,” he said, “the one you sold into Egypt. 5 And now don’t be worried or angry with yourselves for selling me here, because God sent me ahead of you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting. 7 God sent me ahead of you to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.[ab] 8 Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt. I hear a lot these days about woundedness and victimhood and how we are the sum of our experiences and it's Mama's fault or Daddy's fault or anybody's fault but our own. Bunk! If there was EVER any human that had a right to claim the "victim" label it was Joseph - thrown in a hole then sold in to slavery by his brothers because he was Daddy's favorite. Did Joseph spend the rest of his days curled up in a ball or planning revenge against his brothers? Nope, he spent it doing what God had intended for him all along. And, more importantly, he recognized God's plan for him and did the best he could. You see it's about perspective. And faith. And choosing the right side. Joseph realized that through his trials and tribulations he was in a position to be used by God to help not only his family but the people of Egypt and who knows where else. In being a loyal child of God Joseph found victory because, you see, he played on the winning side. Remember, it's not always about you.

This Week's Devotion - SHOUT! “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.” - Isaiah 58:1 Last night Deb and I were in a suburb of Chattanooga attending the "Promotion Ceremony" of our first granddaughter upon her completion of the 8th grade. A room full of 240 excited soon to be former Middle Schoolers, their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and interested parties - most dressed in their Sunday best. This thing was so big tickets were limited and I was about to be regulated to the "overflow room" until we found a scalper and I was able to score a seat (OK, that part might not be exactly true - a kindly teacher said a family had turned in an extra ticket so they let me in but the fear was real). This PUBLIC SCHOOL ceremony began with the presentation of the colors, the pledge of allegiance and, wait for it, a PRAYER by one of the students. I was immediately alert! I turned to Deb for confirmation that the Holy Spirit had indeed been invited to attend this secular event - He was. I texted our resident expert on graduations in Murfreesboro - Tyler Clem. If you didn't know it, Tyler attends EVERY Public and Private High School graduation around here and possibly in the adjoining six counties. He's been busy lately. At any rate he confirmed that here in the Boro we celebrate with a moment of silence at public schools. So I ask you dear readers, why was the Holy Spirit publicly and loudly invited to this event in one part of our great state but only silently acknowledged here? Is it because the event was held in a church not a public facility? We have big churches here. Was it because the laws are different in that part of Tennessee? I don't think so. Or is it because we just don't care enough? I mean, seriously, why worry about the future of the faith? Why worry about the children? Surely, somewhere, someone, somehow, sometime will let them know it's OK to welcome the Holy Spirit NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.

This Week's Devotion - The Day the Skunk Came to Calvary Proverbs 6:16-19 (HCSB) What the Lord Hates 16 The Lord hates six things; in fact, seven are detestable to Him: 17 arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet eager to run to evil, 19 a lying witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up trouble among brothers. Last week the text went out to Staff - "SKUNK IN THE BUILDING!!!!" - Chaos ensued. Our "visitor" took umbrage with one of our AC Units, sprayed it and the aroma quickly found it's way into the building. Doors were opened to dissipate the smell but unfortunately our "visitor" took this as an invitation to browse around the Worship Center. Staff observed his/her progress from a safe distance and the skunk eventually left of it's own accord - the aroma remained. Funny, every church I've ever been in has had it's share of skunks. Some are small and some are pretty large and aggressive. These church skunks can be very hard to identify in their natural habitat. Here's a hint on what they look like - they look just like you and I. Most come in so quietly you usually don't notice them at first. Then they start roaming around and the next thing you notice is the "aroma" they've left - that usually sticks around even after they've gone - if you can get them to leave. The church is never quite the same after their visit. If you check the guidebook ( The Holy Bible) it gives a huge amount of instruction on handling skunks within the family of God. Beware of skunks.

This Week's Devotion - "God made it Fun!" Romans 14:17 (HCSB) 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. We have some friends, you and I, wonderful members of Calvary. You may figure out who when I tell you this story. These friends are doing what so many of us do, have done, or are planning on doing - decluttering. ("Decluttering" - the act of getting rid of stuff you absolutely had to have at the time but now, not so much) . Anyway, these friends are brave beyond imagination. They decided to: A) Have a Yard Sale (oh, the horror) and B: Donate proceeds to our upcoming DR Mission Trip (yay!). Then, friends heard about the Yard Sale and they started donating/decluttering to the cause - think more stuff. Well, the appointed day came and all the planning and work and random visitors and more work and more stuff and some money and then it's over and you're worn out event came to an end. The next night we had our DR Fundraising Dinner and our friends presented their gift. As they were describing the event they ended with, "and God made it FUN." Ain't it the truth?
